Snow chains guide

Snow chains are mounted on tires and provide a driving aid for vehicles traveling on snow-covered roads. In this driving aid is between full snow chains and snow chains distinguished as start-up help. Invented snow chains in 1904 by the American Harry D. Weed. The links of the chains are mostly made of hardened steel, but sometimes also made of textiles, plastic or other materials. To obtain a better frictional resistance, the chain links are usually edged. In between, there are usually loose round links, which provide relief from the adhering snow.

Differences in full-fledged snow chains

On the wheels of the steering axle, the track chains are mounted to give the wheels a longitudinal guide. Tracking chains ensure that the wheels do not slip sideways. This is ensured by running in the direction of chain pieces. For most cars and trucks there are nowadays so-called combined snow chains, which consist of drive and track chains. The chain pieces run in the running direction and across the tread.

Other types of snow chains and their uses

As already mentioned, there are so-called start-up aids in addition to the full snow chains, which are intended to provide assistance with starting difficulties over short distances, such as when leaving a property. After overcoming the difficult terrain, these snow chains are removed from the tires. The journey will then continue normally without traction help. Start-up aids for cars are today in the form of brackets that are mounted on the wheels to find. Also special beltor starting claws can be used as traction help. Another type of snow chains are spin chains, also called rotation chains. These are used on snow-covered or icy traffic routes and consist of several chain strands which are fastened to rotating disks with a vertically arranged axis of rotation. On icy roads, these sprocket sets, which are mounted inboard near the drive wheels, ensure that the rotational movements are offset and the snow chains are thrown in front of the tire tread on the road. This results in a higher friction and better grip of the tires. An advantage of sling chains is that they can be switched on and off again from the driver’s cockpit and are therefore always ready for use. An extra wind up of these snow chains is therefore not necessary. However, this type of snow chains are usually found only in heavy commercial vehicles.

How snow chains are used properly

Snow chains can be attached loosely or tightly tensioned. Loosely assembled snow chains have the advantage that they have a better self-cleaning power. Tight snow chains, on the other hand, damage the tire surface less. In addition, the snow chains need in this way less space in the wheel arches, which is why this use is among the preferred methods. Since not all vehicles have sufficient space in the wheel arches, an assembly of standard snow chains is on winter tiresnot always possible. Therefore, when buying, make sure to choose the right model for the selected vehicle type. Snow chains are mounted by laying them lengthways in front of the tire. Thereafter, the vehicle must be driven on the snow chain to then mount them. Because this process is rather tedious to the inexperienced, snow chain manufacturers offer simplified assembly patents, such as one in which a springy steel ring is hung over the tires to then ride on the chains and hang the outside of the snow chains together. After installing snow chains you should check the tension after a few meters and tighten the chains if necessary.
