Motherboard Guide

Tips and information about motherboards

The motherboard forms the basis of every computer. Above all, it offers the slots for all the hardware in and on a computer and is thus the skeleton of the system. But while most users make sure that the computer has enough USB ports and the other peripheral devices can be connected. On closer inspection, however, it is noticeable that a motherboard has much larger tasks than just being a board full of slots. The quality of the mainboard has a significant effect on the entire system and contributes greatly to the speed of a computer. Since the differences between the individual manufacturers are very clear and there are many models and model series from a manufacturer that allow the installation of different components, it is of central importance to know the characteristics of a motherboard and build the computer accordingly.

What a motherboard provides

On motherboard First and foremost, it is the basis for a computer because it provides all the slots necessary to build the system. The motherboard distributes the electricity, which from the power adapteris supplied and so supplies the individual components. Also devices like monitor, Mouse and keyboard, as printer. speakerand similar parts are connected to the motherboard. But what is the most important and at the same time most overlooked task of the mainboard is its computing power. Computers are always advertised with very powerful processors. What only a few know, however, is the fact that the processor appears only as a so-called multiplier. This means that it only multiplies the performance of the motherboard. If the mainboard offers only a weak computing power, even the best processor can hardly contribute to a high-quality system. Decisive for the performance of the motherboard is the built-chipset. This is further developed with each generation of motherboards and makes a significant contribution to the overall computing power of the system. The performance of the built-in chipset is ultimately offset against the performance of the processor and provides part of the overall performance of the system. In addition, the motherboard mediates between the individual hardware components and influences the read and write rates of the main memory and the hard disk, as well as the processing power of the graphics processor graphic card, Therefore, there is also a very strong competition between the individual manufacturers. Although a single chipset is being developed for each new generation of motherboards by a few specialized companies, these continue to modify the individual motherboard manufacturers, offering different levels of performance. Although these are uninteresting for ordinary users, they play a significant role in gaming PCs and other high-performance systems.

What to look for in a motherboard

For a motherboard, it depends mainly on what you want to use the calculator. Motherboards are more or less strongly tailored for high performance and should be selected accordingly. High-performance computers require the high-end models of well-known manufacturers such as Gigabyte, ASRock or Asus. These should always have the latest chipset, for example (as of summer 2016) the Intel Z170 chipset. Especially important is the socket for the processor. It is also updated with the latest technology and is only compatible with certain processors. Accordingly, the motherboard must have a socket matching the most powerful processors – some models even have sockets for two processors. Currently (summer 2016), a 1151 socket would be the best choice, as it enables the Intel Core i7 6700K processor, which is currently the most powerful model for home use. In addition, the motherboard should be compatible with the latest and most powerful memory and four, possibly eight slots offer this. Although it is to a certain extent a matter of faith, Intel is increasingly emerging from AMD as the leading processor manufacturer. The soon to be released memory technology Intel 3D XPoint will further expand the leadership. Ultimately, however, it must be said that motherboards are no longer recommended for AMD processors.
