Bavaria Flag Guide

The striking Bavaria flag in white and blue
In the Free State of Bavaria, two different flags are used, both of which exist side by side since 1953. These include the diamond flag and the stripe flag, both of which are in the national colors of white and blue. However, the diamond flag has prevailed in many places more than the strip flag due to their striking pattern. This consists of at least 21 diamonds, which are also known as awakening. In this context, the cut diamonds are also counted. When compiled, the first diamond on the upper left side of the flag is always white. In contrast, the stripe flag consists of only one white and one blue stripe, both of which are horizontal, with the white stripe at the top. For both flag models no fixed ratio of width to length is given. In addition, the authorities are properly clear which of the two flags will be used. Official Bavarian flags do not bear state emblems, but this is often printed on privately used flags.

The historical background of the Bavaria flag
The origin of the Bavaria flag goes back well into the Middle Ages, into the epoch of knights and castles. Since the 12th century, the open spaces on the shields of the knights are used as identifying features. The symbols applied to them became the distinctive signs and coats of arms of the ruling aristocratic families and dynasties. It is believed that the diamond pattern has evolved over time from the iron grid, which served as reinforcement of the shields. The white and blue rhombuses were in the coat of arms of the counts of arcHeld, a noble family from eastern Bavaria, with headquarters in Bogenberg at Straubing. Since 1242, the Wittelsbacher lead the distinctive diamonds in their blazon.

The coat of arms of the Free State of Bavaria
The Bavarian coat of arms consists of a shield held by two powerful lions. In its now known form, this is the officially recognized coat of arms of the Free State since 1950. The shield is divided into four separate fields, each of which has a different meaning. In the upper field on the left side is the golden lion for the district of Oberpfalz. Right next to it is the Franconian rakein white on a red background. This symbolizes the government districts of Central, Upper and Lower Franconia. In the lower field on the left side a blue panther can be seen, which stands for the old Bavarian government districts of Lower Bavaria and Upper Bavaria. Furthermore, the three black lions in the lower field on the right embody the administrative district of Swabia. In the middle of the state coat of arms a small shield is used, which stands with the white-and-blue diamond pattern as a symbol of the entire Free State of Bavaria. At the top of the coat of arms is the People’s Crown, symbolizing the sovereignty and independence of the people after the abolition of the royal crown. The Bavarian coat of arms is depicted on many flags, in different forms, sometimes with and without framing lions. This presentation is not official, but is tolerated by the authorities.

The remarks of the Bavaria flag for different occasions
As executions for the Bavaria flag Banner flags, Hoisting Flagn and Hissflaggen are available to choose from. The banner flags are provided on the upper edge with a hemstitch for the supporting crossbar and a suspension device. The Hoisting Flagstands in portrait orientation and is fitted with a plastic snap-hook on the left-hand side. The smaller Hissflagge is in landscape format and has on the left short side of a plastic snap hook. All models have the remaining pages lined up. In addition to the classic flag models, the Bayern flag is used as a symbol for many products. These include gifts, souvenirs, clothing, liquor bottles, snuff, games in Bavarian, watches, promotional items, advertising materials and accessories for the Weißwurst preparation.
