Decaffeinated coffee guide

Decaffeinated coffee is coffee that has been deprived of caffeine by a specific procedure. In Europe, decaffeinated coffee should contain less than 0.1 percent caffeine. There is an exception for instant coffee. Here it may be up to 0.3 percent. Outside of Europe, things are not so dogged. Here, a coffee that is considered decaffeinated may contain a maximum of 3.0 percent caffeine. Best suited for decaffeination are the Arabica beans. Because these contain in comparison to the Robusta beans only half as much caffeine naturally. This was already known by the Bremen coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius, who was also founder of the company Kaffee HAG later. Roselius came up with the idea to make decaffeinated coffee, because he assumed the high coffee consumption as the cause of death of his father, who died at age 59. The first decaffeinated coffee was produced in Germany in 1903. Roselius patented the process of decaffeination. However, decaffeination according to the Roselius process is no longer used today. The reason for this is that you had to work here with cancer-causing substances.

Various methods for decaffeination

Today, the so-called Swiss-water process is rarely used for the decaffeination of coffee. This method was developed in the late 1970s and is rather uneconomical. Because a big part of the coffee beansmust be disposed of. Nevertheless, the process is still considered effective among experts, especially in that it is chemical free and ensures that the maximum coffee flavor is maintained. For very few coffees, the process is still used today. The decaffeinated coffee is however correspondingly expensive. The direct process for decaffeination is much more economical and cost effective. And the indirect method promises high efficiency and a good aroma. In the process, indirect decaffeination led back to the traces of Roselius. Also widely used is the carbon dioxide process, a kind of decaffeination with a lot of pressure. The gentlest method is the triglyceride process, as it uses coffee bean oils. In these the coffee beans are inserted. The aromas and flavors are retained in this process.

Healthier?

Decaffeinated coffee is a matter of taste many say. If you have chosen a brand that has been prepared with a process that does not retain the aromas, you can really taste the difference to regular coffee. Decaffeinated coffee is healthier especially for those who suffer from a so-called caffeine intolerance. These are not so few people, even if you do not think so. Many sufferers do not even know that they suffer from this intolerance. They get an irritated stomach after every coffee treat, have tachycardia or sweats or start to shiver. Decaffeinated coffee is also suitable for those who often drink plenty of coffee and have to watch their blood pressure. And pregnant women should rather resort to decaffeinated coffee. On the other hand, there are studies that prove that caffeine-free coffee is more harmful, especially to the heart, than the caffeine-containing variant. Incidentally, the right daily amount of caffeine is 4-5 mg per kilo of body weight. Therefore, every healthy person can consume five cups of coffee a day without the threat of health risks. The decaffeinated variant of course has far less mg of caffeine. But that does not mean that you can drink up to 20 cups of it without any impact on your health.

Decaffeinated coffee has been around for more than 100 years. However, there is still the prejudice that the variant with little caffeine would have less taste. It depends mainly on the process by which the coffee beans caffeine was withdrawn before roasting. If you want to pay attention to a balanced diet, you will always buy decaffeinated coffee.
