BMX Bike Guide

BMX bikes have been around since the 60s, and even today they are very popular with young people. The three letters BMX stand for Bicycle Motocross, where the X

the word cross can be symbolized and translated in German with crosses or crosses. The first ones were developed BMX bikesin the USA. They were first driven there by some daredevil athletes who tried stunts and tricks with them on halfpipes or simply in streets and squares. BMX wheels were considered the official successors of the Sting-Ray wheels, which were also referred to as stingrays and with which also already could perform some feats. Compared to these wheels, however, the BMX bikes already had significantly harder and more stable frame. However, was held on the high handlebars, which could be found in the stingrays. In addition to the use for trick driving BMX bikes are used for many years for running on sand tracks or pistes, as they are very good for jumping. The wheels experienced the biggest boom in Germany in the 80s.

Construction of the BMX wheels

BMX bikes are usually very small in size and equipped with 20-inch wheels. The slightly larger variant has 24-inch wheels and is referred to as a BMX cruiser. In general, the wheels are made of aluminum and anodized in most cases. Since aluminum is significantly softer compared to steel, the rims have several hollow chambers, ie several walls that run horizontally and vertically, so as to achieve a higher rigidity. Compared to the steel wheels, however, they score with a significantly lighter weight. In the 1980s, BMX bikes were very popular for a while, so-called Tuff Wheels. Instead of spokes, these had broad plastic struts. At that time, these tires could withstand higher loads better than conventional spoke wheels. Over the years, however, these tuff wheels disappeared more and more, as the spoke wheels were further improved and in the end could score with a lower weight and a better rigidity. If the rims on modern BMX wheels are made of aluminum, the spokes are usually made of steel. The frames are made of aluminum, steel or carbon. The pedals offer very large treads and are very robust. They can be made of aluminum or plastic. As brakes are mainly so-called U and V brakes are used. At the hubs are often grown bridges, on which special feats can be done better. Since BMX bikes are basically designed for courses, halfpipes or sand tracks, they give up lamps, Reflectors and mudguards and are therefore not allowed in this country for normal road traffic.

Well-known BMX riders

Born in Oklahoma City, Mat Hoffmann is considered the great legend in BMX sports and has won nearly all competitions and developed many stunts during his playing days. Today he runs his own bicycle label. Stephan Prantl and Thomas Stellwag were very popular in the German BMX scene in Germany in the 80s and 90s. They were followed by the multiple German champion Markus Wilke, who also secured the European and World Champion titles. In the X Games, which are considered the most important extreme sports event, he was able to secure the silver medal in 2000. Since 2008, BMX driving is one of the Olympic disciplines, and in Germany the BMX Masters, also known as BMX Cologne, are the most important tournament. In addition, BMX wheels became very famous in the films E.T. and BMX bandits.

BMX wheels in the trade

Competition-ready BMX bikes are largely made by small bicycle shops, which are often operated by former or presently active drivers themselves. Simple BMX wheels for children and adolescents can be obtained in stores or over the Internet for between 100 and 200 euros. However, if you value good workmanship and first-class materials, you have to invest a lot more, and there are no limits to the price of BMX wheels, as with so many things.
