Epoxy glue Advisor

What are epoxy adhesives?

Epoxy adhesives consist of the two components resin and hardener. For the epoxy resin polymer blocks are used, which carry so-called epoxy groups. Most of these are reaction products of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol-A. After mixing with the hardener, which consists of mercapto or amino groups, these form a stable thermosets. The curing of the epoxy adhesive can be done at room temperature and higher temperature. At higher temperatures usually better strengths of the epoxy adhesive are achieved. Due to its high strength, this adhesive is often used for structural bonding e.g. used in aircraft or vehicle construction. But there are also one-component epoxy , whose components hardener and resin are already mixed during production in the optimum ratio. In this case, curing agents (e.g., dicyndiamide) are used which do not react so rapidly at room temperature and therefore must be hot cured. Some epoxy you can also freeze to increase their limited shelf life.

application risks

1. When using many epoxy products is a protective gearprescribed for skin protection. These include special nitrile, butyl, butyl / viton or PE laminate gloves. thin Disposable glovesVinyl, latex or nitrile are less suitable because allergenic substances through these glovescan penetrate.
2. After curing can epoxy only be removed mechanically.
3. Miscellaneous Epoxides have a sensitizing effect and are classified as carcinogenic or suspected to be carcinogens.
4. It is not always possible with manual processing, the compliance of the predetermined mixing ratio of both components.

Use and benefits of epoxy in the automotive industry

1. In the frequently used spot welds the forces are introduced only punctually. When glued with epoxy this happens over a large area.
2. The fatigue strength (fatigue strength) and the rigidity are considerably higher by the use of epoxy adhesive.
3. Some types of steel can not be welded due to their structure and are therefore often glued with this adhesive.
4. With just small gaps of 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm, epoxy adhesives have the highest strength and are often used in fluting folds. An additive in small proportions improves the corrosion protection of the adhesives in the rebate area. In addition, these adhesives expand under heat during curing and thus fill up existing bubbles and gaps.
5. However, this requires accurate and stable process control in the manufacture, application and curing. Otherwise, this could lead to uncontrolled leaks of the epoxy adhesive at the fold. This can only be removed mechanically and disturbs the subsequent coating process.
6. Basically, the epoxy adhesive is suitable for spot welding in the automotive industry, but its weldability decreases with the addition of glass beads. In addition, the adhesive can burn at high heat input.
7. Especially in the crash-relevant areas, e.g. Doors, sills or engine mounts, the epoxy adhesive must have a high static strength and keep this under extreme dynamic load also. This strength is also known as impact, toughness or toughness. A special chemical structure in the cured epoxy adhesive can achieve this impact resistance. This can e.g. a reactive thermoplastic in the formulation of the adhesive. Should a sudden load occur and these additives are not present in the adhesive, this can lead to the failure of the epoxy adhesive and the deformation energy is no longer properly absorbed by the glued component.
