Metabo chop saw guide

A chop sawvisually reminiscent of a classic table sawHowever, it was designed primarily for cutting wood. The cutting angle can be adjusted by means of a scale, so that the sawis flexible. Although the chop saw is not suitable for very strong or wide wood – if you regularly want to cut small boards, laminate or parquet, you will certainly make the right choice with this special saw. Useful information about buying a chop saw is available here.

Information about power, idle speed and saw blade diameter

The power given by the manufacturer (in watts) is primarily an indication of how much power the chop saw consumes. However, it does not say how fast and effective you can saw with the machine. The idle speed is more meaningful in this context: It indicates how often the saw blade turns in a minute. In order to be able to use your chop saw as flexibly as possible and without much effort, the idling speed should be at least 4,000 revolutions per minute. Also with regard to the saw blade diameter, a lot has to be considered. The larger the diameter, the thicker the workpieces can be processed with the chop saw. The saw blade diameter of most saws is between 210 and 260 mm, such as the Einhell TC-SM 2131 Dual (210 mm) and the Makita LS1018L (260 mm).

The saw blade

A chop saw can be equipped with different saw blades. Basically, the more teeth the saw blade has, the better the cut will be. As a rule, a universal saw blade made of carbide is part of the scope of delivery. It is suitable for hard and soft wood, as well as for plastics, aluminum, copper and chipboard veneered wood such as laminate and parquet. Also widely used is the special sheet with negative alternating tooth. It reliably prevents the workpiece from pulling itself into the saw, allowing the user precise cuts and maximum control. The special blade with negative alternating tooth is particularly well suited for cross sections in softwood, hardwood, plastic coated and chipboard veneered wood. The so-called dry cutter, on the other hand, is a multifunctional blade that is only used in slow-turning metal chop saws. With the aid of the dry cutter, iron, solid wood and plastic are preferably cut. If you primarily want to saw thin wood, plywood or wood for modeling, make the right choice with the thin-cutting saw blade. It is characterized by precise cuts, low cutting loss and a light running behavior.

Depth of cut and cutting width: an overview

When buying a chop saw it is worthwhile to compare the dimensions for the maximum depth of cut and cutting width thoroughly. For example, the cutting width specified by the manufacturer at 90 degrees indicates the maximum width of the workpiece so that it can be easily machined with a vertical cut. For example, the cutting width of the Metabo KS 216 m chop saw is 305 mm, the maximum cutting depth is 65 mm. The cutting size of 45 degrees is especially important for you if you want to cut mitred workpieces, such as strips. Depending on the angle you want to work in, the differences in cutting width and cutting depth for one and the same saw can sometimes be very large, so it is advisable to take a close look.
