Odor trap advisor

Why is an odor trap so important?

As an odor trap, a gas-tight closure of pipe systems is referred to in the technical field. Synonyms for this important component are siphon or trap. Trap is the English word for trap, and the picture is quite fitting, because this piece is designed to trap even the most evil smells. The odor trap in sanitary engineering plays a particularly important role. Without this part, the gasses from the sewage system could freely enter the bathroom or the kitchen. The thought alone causes discomfort. That’s why each one is sink, every toilet, every shower cup, every gully and every spout is equipped with such an odor trap.

The functional principle of the odor trap is simple. In the simplest case, there is a bent pipe between the drainpipe and the connection point, in which a sufficient amount of sealing water must be present at all times. If a sink is not used for several days, it can happen that the shut-off water evaporates and the direct connection between the drainage pipe and the bathroom or the kitchen is released in this way. Immediately spreads in the apartment a very unpleasant smell. If you want to prevent such surprises during a long absence, you can add some glycerine or oil to the drain before you leave. The grease layer reduces evaporation and the siphon can fulfill its function. Alternatively, you can seal the drain with a well-fitting rubber stopper.

Types of odor trap

The simplest and most frequently used type of odor trap is a U-tube. This design is also commercially available under the name of tube siphon. For aesthetic reasons, such an odor trap is often hidden behind a pillar or in a base cabinet. The bottle or cup siphon takes up less space. Therefore, this design is often used for floor-level showers or small hand basinused.

After prolonged use, grains of sand and other particles settle on the deepest part of the siphon. If the water can no longer flow freely, the odor trap must be cleaned. This is done by removing the cover. Then the bent part has to be loosened. Before you should one bucketor place a bowl in order to catch the sealing water contained in the trap. Occasionally, the bent tube is so strong that it can no longer be solved and the odor trap must be replaced. Since models with different dimensions are offered in the trade, you should bring along the odor trap to be exchanged. Then you can make sure that everything will fit exactly.

If the bent pipe is easily removed, it is thoroughly cleaned. The easiest way to do this is with a discarded bottle brush. To prevent dripping after assembly, you should replace all gaskets with new gaskets.

Oven closures that have proven themselves in practice

The trade offers a wide range of odor traps. First of all, you have to decide which design is most advantageous for your purpose. For a normal sized sink a siphon with U-tube is well suited. For small sinks and showers, bottle siphons with a smaller overall height are required.
